Never put another M&M in your mouth ever again
Undoubtedly, no one can resist those colorful button-shaped chocolatey snacks known as M&Ms, but when it comes to this specific brand, we have some shocking news. Actually, the quality of the ingredients found in M&Ms is very questionable.
Unfortunately, there are reasons why you should never put another M&M in your mouth ever again.
This popular chocolate snack M&M was first introduced in 1941 by Forrest E. Mars and William F.R Murrie (Hershey Chocolate’s President Son). Their partnership of these two men ensured that Mars can use Hershey chocolate in their own products.
The M&M was created so that the soldiers can carry chocolate on a war that doesn’t melt.
Nowadays, M&M is sold in over a hundred countries and with about 33 different types of fillings.
In 1976, they were banned from the use of food since they contained dyes that were considered to be carcinogenic. But, in 1983, these candies were reintroduced.
The consumers requested the company to remove the artificial dyes used in their candies since they are believed to be ‘neurotoxic chemicals, by a Change.org petition and a press release from the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI).
As CSPI’s recommendations,it should be included warning labels on all food products that contain artificial colors like Red Dye#2.
According to Dr. Jacobson,
“The evidence that these petrochemicals worsen some children’s behavior is convincing.
I hope that the committee will advise the agency to both require warning notices and encourage companies to voluntarily switch to safer natural colorings.”
These are the risky ingredients contained in the Original M&M’s:
Milk chocolate (sugar, chocolate, cocoa butter, skim milk, milkfat, lactose, soy lecithin, salt, artificial color), sugar, corn starch, >1% corn syrup, dextrin, artificial colors (Blue 1 Lake, Red 40 Lake, Yellow 6, Yellow 5, Red 40, Blue 1, Blue 2 Lake, Yellow 6 Lake, Yellow 5 Lake, Blue 2),gum acacia.
Given the fact that this gigantic company has an income of $27.4 million dollars, according to the 2007 Forbes, many people signed a petition urging the makers of M&Ms to use their profits for a good cause and to make their product safe for human consumption. Until then, they are not recommended for consumption.
Even though, it has been scientifically proven that these sweets are not safe for human consumption, they were classified as safe by the FDA. The Mars Company ignore the requests to switch to a safer alternative and didn’t respond the GSPI’s recommendations to put a warning labels on all foods containing artificial colors, but you need to know that you should never put another M&M in your mouth ever again.
